Bio

Anuj Karpatne is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida, where he also serves as the Assistant Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Informatics Research Institute. His research focuses on advancing knowledge-guided machine learning (KGML) to accelerate scientific discovery by integrating scientific knowledge with artificial intelligence. His work spans a broad range of scientific domains, including climate science, hydrology, ecology, geophysics, mechanobiology, trait-based biology, quantum mechanics, and fluid dynamics. Dr. Karpatne received the NSF CAREER Award in 2023, the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot Award in 2024, for which he was invited to speak at the White House, and multiple research awards at Virginia Tech, including the Faculty Fellow Award for Excellence in Research (2025), the Outstanding New Assistant Professor Award (2022), the Rising Star Faculty Award (2021), and the IS-GEO Inaugural Research Fellow Award (2019). He serves as an Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data (TKDD) and is the lead editor of the first comprehensive book on Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning as well as a co-author of the second edition of the Introduction to Data Mining book. He completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota with Prof. Vipin Kumar in 2017 and was a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech for 8 years before joining the University of Florida.
